The financial legacy of the COVID-19 pandemic
What will be the financial legacy of the COVID-19 pandemic? History is rife with examples of events such as the Industrial Revolution, world wars, and now COVID with extraordinary long-term effects on the global economy, financial markets, and political systems. One of the legacies of COVID-19 is inflation that in some places is at multidecade highs and that will require central banks to act decisively. Our view is that tight labor markets and strong wage pressures will dictate the pace of rate hikes. Over the last decade, real rates on government debt have been negative; central banks, green investment, and accelerated innovation will all help drive negative rates’ impending reversal. The beginning of the end of secular stagnation will be COVID-19’s greatest financial legacy, and that’s great news for long-term investors.
