Pre-Conference Workshop: College Planning For Advisors

1 Hour CFP Board CE Credits/ I&WI Pending
Every advisor has clients with children or grandchildren who plan to attend college. Yet these clients don’t know how complex the college planning process has become until it’s too late and often end up making poor choices that saddle them and their children with unnecessary debt. Advisors who become educated on college planning can make a huge difference in their clients’ lives. We are excited to bring this workshop to Invest in Women to help advisors learn how they can help parents with college bound teens understand their options and make better choices. Learn a system for better college planning that will help differentiate your planning practice and simplify the way you attract and serve clients.

B: Time For Change: A Discussion On Joining, Starting Or Leaving An RIA

Over the past five years, more than 800 advisors have left wirehouses or broker-dealers to join registered investment advisors or start their own firms. And judging by the statistics, a large majority of those advisors are women: female executives in financial services are 20% to 30% more likely to leave mid-career than any other industry. The question is, why?
During this panel, three advisors will offer answers to these questions, as well as the benefits and risks involved with breaking away or pursuing entrepreneurship in financial services. Citing insights from their personal experiences and real situations, they will also explore the all-important business, personal, and cultural considerations that female advisors should keep top of mind when choosing the path that’s right for them — whether they decide to go it alone, plug into a TAMP, enter into a partnership or join another firm.

How Longevity Is Reshaping Advice
1 Hour CFP Board CE Credits/ I&WI Pending
How long will you live? An unprecedented population of Americans are living well into their 80s and 90s—most of them women. These trailblazing women are pioneering a new normal of active and independent living, and fueling economic growth far longer than past generations. But is the wealth management industry ready to serve this transformative population of clients? In this session, Angie O’Leary, head of wealth planning at RBC Wealth Management—U.S., and Dr. Miles Varn, CEO of PinnacleCare, will explore longevity and aging from the perspective of health, wealth and caregiving. The session will touch on the expertise firms and advisors need to best serve clients, how firms can work with families to ensure the best care and quality of life for clients and how the rising prevalence of dementia and cognitive decline factors into the work of advisors today and in the future. The session will close on a provocative note, exploring the new frontier of aging backwards (myths and realities) as scientists seek to slow the effects of aging to prolong vitality and wellbeing.

A Reality Check For Women In Retirement
1 Hour CFP Board CE Credits/ I&WI Pending
We have all seen the ads on TV or in magazines, of youthful-looking couples playing golf, romping with grandchildren or traveling to far-flung destinations. These ads are intended to depict what successful retirement looks like, and are run by major financial advisory firms to attract affluent clients. Eleanor Blayney and Marjorie Fox—both with decades of advisory experience and now retired—would argue that retirement is no leisurely walk in the park, especially for women. Once women enter their 60s, the odds of living alone, due to the death of a spouse or divorce—grows every year. This new single life for women has all sorts of implications for financial security in retirement. There are many difficult decisions to be made in retirement such as how to find the resources to support these years and how to prepare for incapacity and death. In this keynote session, Eleanor and Marjorie will speak—not as advisors—but as older women who are dealing with these realities. The two are collaborating on a book—due for release later this year or early 2021—covering topics that women in or nearing retirement need to consider.
Speakers:
Eleanor Blayney, Former CFP Board Consumer Advocate
Marjorie Fox, Founder, FJY Financial
